We started in Indonesia, our home country. A beautiful country with abundant natural resources. It has 17,508 Islands and population around 237 million people. The fourth most populated country in the world.
Indonesia comprising 33 provinces and has 5 big and main islands, namely Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua and Java.
Kalimantan, the biggest Island of Indonesia. The Indonesian territory of Kalimantan makes up 2/3 of Borneo Islands. Well known for its tropical forests, rich natural resources, and exotic flora and fauna. Kalimantan offers a unique, unexplored world of its own.
Rivers plays a very important role in communication and economy of the inhabitants. There are four provinces: East, South, Central and West which have their own governor.
East Kalimantan is home to the longest river in Kalimantan, the Mahakam river, where freshwater dolphin can be found, East Kalimantan is growing to be an industrially advanced area. This is contributed by its position as a major producer of oil, timber and gold.
South Kalimantan, the rich, fertile province is divided into two distinct regions by the Meratus Mountains. The abundance of forests with their wide variety of trees has helped make this province one of the largest wood producers in Indonesia.
Central Kalimantan. Covering an area of 153,800 square kms and consisting mostly of dense jungles, this is the largest province of the island.
West Kalimantan. The nickname “land of the equator” earned by this province is contributed by the geographic position of its capital, Pontianak, which lies exactly on the equator. Because of its strategic location in the trade route of neighboring countries, this province is easily accessible from Jakarta and Singapore. Like other Kalimantan provinces, this land is also rich of unexplored natural resources, such as minerals and precious stones.
Sumatra. An Island of western Indonesia in the Indian Ocean South of the Malay Peninsula. Long an important stopping point on the trading route between China and India. It’s one of the Sunda Islands and the 2nd largest island in Indonesia.
The Bukit Barisan, a volcanic mountain range, traverses its length, reaching 12,467 ft (3,800 m) at Mt. Kerinci. In the north is the great salt lake Toba. Because of the hot, moist climate and heavy rainfall, the vegetation is luxuriant and much of the eastern half of the island is swampland. Its exports include rubber, tobacco, coffee, pepper and timber products; mineral reserves include petroleum and coal.
Java. Although Java is the fifth largest island of Indonesia, constituting only one seventh of the country’s total area, it contains two thirds of the country’s population; it’s one of the most densely populated regions in the world. For centuries it has been the cultural, political and economic center of the area. In Java are the republic’s capital and largest city, Jakarta and the second and third largest cities, Surabaya and Bandung. Tanjung Priok is the chief port, and Yogyakarta and Surakarta are cultural centers.
Most of Indonesia’s sugarcane and kapok are grown in Java. Rubber, tea, coffee, tobacco, cacao and cinchona are produced in highland plantations. Rice is the chief small-farm crop. Cattle are raised in the east. In the northeast are important oil fields; tin, gold, silver, copper, coal, manganese, phosphate and sulfur are mined. Most of the country;s manufacturing establishments are in Java. Industry is centered chiefly in Jakarta and Surabaya, but Bandung is a noted textile center.
